In an article marketing campaign, most article directories will allow you to write a description and keywords that relate to your article. Of course, the title is always there. Just make sure to include your keywords in any area that involves writing.

So, why would another website recommend your site?
The reason anyone refers anyone is because they find your content to be entertaining, educational or enlightening.
If you provide good content that your target market is interested in, other websites will recommend your site.
Now, in real life, having other people recommending your website doesn't happen very often. Every once in a while you may write something that gets people interested enough to recommend your site, but mostly you won't get a lot of recommendations from other site owners.

Not only that, we have to find websites that are already getting preferential treatment from the search engines and plant the recommendation to our site. We have to do this so the search engines send traffic to a website of our choice.

Squidoo articles frequently get good search engine rankings. Anyone can open up an account on Squidoo, write an article and they will get traffic to a website.
Many people who create Squidoo pages include a section called "recommended links". Go to Squidoo pages that have this section.
Then, all you have to do is click the "add to this" button and write in the recommendation to your website. Be sure to use the keywords you are targeting in the description portion of the form. The keywords are what will direct targeted traffic to a website.
That's it. It's that simple. Do this on as many Squidoo sites as you can. The more websites you have recommending your site, the higher you are likely to rank in the search engine results and get traffic to a website.
Be careful though. If your website is not relevant to what the Squidoo page is about, the search engines won't give much value to your recommendation. They will give some importance, so having a link is better than not having a link, but a relevant link is sooo much more valuable. It's really worth your time to make your recommendation relevant to the topic being discussed on the page.
Also, if you are adding irrelevant links to someone's site, that person will remove your entry and your time would have been wasted.
On the other hand, if you add a relevant comment and a relevant link, all the people who visit that site could potentially be interested in your website also. That will give you much more traffic to a website.
That's good marketing. If you do it right, you will end up getting traffic to your website from the Squidoo traffic and you will get preferential treatment from the search engines as well.
